Wedding Vows

Blood of my blood

Bone of my bone

I give ye my body

That we may be one

I give ye my spirit

Till our life be done

-Scottish wedding vow

Recently as I was browsing through the net, I happened to come across the above verse! Then it set me thinking that it was a very nice topic for my next blog!

Wedding/Marriage/Holy Matrimony/Wed lock....whatever you call it .....it still symbolises the official union between two persons...until death do them apart!

But all these things seems so funny...I have seen many people who go through weddings out of pressure and because its the rule of the society and stuff. And once after marriage, its the girl's duty to do everything at home; like take care of kid(s), cook food and then have a career..She is trained to be a juggler! And then, its the guys responsibility to toil day in and day out, without any time for himself to provide for the family and listen to his wife's nagging!

Its quite funny and I used to wonder who came up with the idea of all this conjugal bond! I am not against marriage! Everyone needs a companion to share, to care,to love,to live with and of course even to die for!

The idea of companionship doen't mean that the two individuals are ONE...like in, stuck with some adhesive gum! They are still two individuals with different thoughts and outlook of as to how to see life...They will have different perspectives to living life! One must respect each other and adjust.

The reasons people marry vary, but usually include one or more of the following: legal, social and economic stability; the formation of a family unit; procreation and the education and nurturing of children; legitimizing sexual relations; public declaration of love.

Whatever the reason may be, every person who decide to get married must take a wedding vow as written by Khalil Gibran...

You were born to be together, and together you shall be forevermore.

You shall be together when the wings of death scatter your days.

Ay, you shall be together even in your silent memory.

But let there be spaces in your togetherness,

And let the winds of the heaven dance between you.

Love one another, but make not a bondage of love.

Let it rather be a moving sea between the shores of your souls.

Fill each other's cup, but drink not from one cup.

Give one another of your bread, but eat not of the same loaf.

Sing and dance together and be joyous, but let each of you be alone,

Even as the strings of a lute are alone, though they quiver with the same music.

Give your hearts, but not into each other's keeping,

For only the hand of life can contain your hearts.

And stand together, yet not too near together,

For the pillars of the temple stand apart,

And the oak tree and the cypress grow not in shadow.

Its a very beautiful wedding vow... I do share such a beautiful relation with my significant other! He has given me all the space I need, respecting my need of privacy and individuality. We both think differently, have different visions, have different opinions...but like I said we have learnt to adjust...I always want him to be happy and so does he want me to be! Our love comes from undersatnding each other, adjusting to each other, shouting at each other, making fun of each other, seeing dreams together and fulfilling our individual dreams alongwith our dreams and being there for each other! We stand together but a bit away from each other!
We never read the wedding vow written by Khalil Gibran. But we some how followed this understanding from the beginning!
If only everyone followed this understanding from the beginning!
